Beyond the Obvious: Photographs from the Scottish Highlands

Born in South East London during WW2, I have found over the years a greater empathy for the countryside than for the environment in which I was brought up.A late discovery of the far north of Scotland was a revelation to me. That such exquisite landscape was so easily available was magic. For many years I photographed the pre-historic and the clearance sites together with those buildings special to northern Scotland, the brochs in monochrome.Recently I have started to work in colour using the techniques honed over the years in view camera usage and exposure evaluation.I have always loved the work of Eliot Porter and began to work in a similar but, I believe, my own personal style. The view camera gives me control of the image I wish to capture and, together with its movements, I have complete control of the plane of focus. The large film format gives wonderful detail, excellent colour gradation and feeling of light that requires a contemplative approach to image making, which I believe shines through in my landscape work. Not for me the grand vista but the more intimate revelations of nature’s processes.

Work in progress includes documenting the people of a Sutherland village where I have recently purchased a cottage, discovering corrugated structures and the enigma of dilapidated petrol pumps.

Landscape:-

In Nature man was evolved. In Nature man progressed from a sea bound to an earthbound creature.Yet man having turned his back on Nature, destroys rather than nurtures her.Modern man sees only the bright colours, the obvious visual delights of Nature. Few look beyond the obvious.Few see the relationships between the myriad elements, which make such complex yet beautiful visual structures of colour and form.Move the tripod a foot this way or that, return in an hour, a day, a week, a month or a year and all is changed. Constantly re-arranging herself Nature never rests.

My images are a celebration of this on-going process within which man was once an integral part, but has now only an uneasy relationship.

Petrol Pumps:-

Photographs of disused and forlorn looking pumps. They have a very enigmatic look about them and often display a sentient presence.

Corrugated Structures:-First noticed in Sutherland, Scotland, Glen's Church being the first photographed, I now notice them in many areas of the UK.

Presumably inexpensive to construct and maintain.
